Clomid is a brand name of a generic drug used and marketed to treat infertility among women due to anovulation or oligoovulation. Anovulation is a condition in which ovaries do not produce an oocyte, thereby, ovulation will not occur. Chronic anovulation is one of the most common underlying causes of infertility.
Clomiphene, or clomifene, is the generic name of Clomid, a non-steroidal drug used in the treatment of infertility. It works by stimulating the pituitary gland to produce the needed hormones for ovulation, which may lead to either menstruation or pregnancy.
This particular drug has been used together with other reproductive techniques in increasing the success rate of pregnancy. Clomid has been tested and used for some other medical purposes that are not listed on its label.
How Clomid Works
Clomid prevents the estrogen receptors on the specific parts of the brain from releasing negative signals in order to excrete hormones that will induce ovulation. Infertility among women is commonly caused by lack of ovulation.
The renewed ability to ovulate is caused by high levels of estrogen and progesterone. Clomid enhances the production of estrogen and progesterone in the anterior part of pituitary gland and hypothalamus of the brain. When pregnancy occurs, it is the embryo that produces estrogen and progesterone to maintain and sustain the pregnancy.
Adverse Effects of Clomid (Clomifene) On Users
It was found that the drug has an adverse reaction to users. There is a risk of developing enlargement of the ovary. Roughly 10 percent of women using clomifene developed a curable ovarian enlargement.
Here are some less common side effects of the drug:
- Visual problems such as blurry vision, having a double vision, floaters, sensitivity to light, or scotomata
- Headaches or hot flashes
- Abnormal uterine bleeding and/or abdominal discomfort
- Very rarely, some clomifene users may experience the following conditions:
- High level of triglycerides in the blood
- Inflammation of the liver
- Loss of hair or baldness that is reversible
- Hyper-stimulation syndrome in the ovary
In some studies, there was no data that using clomifene could result in spontaneous abortions or congenital anomalies or neonatal abnormalities in the fetus. The results gathered in the study were almost the same as the data gathered on the general population that do not use the drug. However, some studies suggest that the possibility of having twins and triplets is higher than that of the general population. This phenomenon can be the direct result of multiple ovulations brought about by the use of clomifene.
There is no reported or known adverse effect of using this drug on a long term basis. Continued research is on-going to protect consumers and its potential users.
Psychological and Emotional Side Effects of Clomid (Clomifene or Clomiphene)
There is a well-known effect of the drug on the emotional or psychological mood of women. They tend to be more irritable. They should be given more love and attention when they are under such a severe mood swing. Not all women experience this emotional or psychological condition, some women say that such a swing mood is tolerable, but some other women who have undergone such severe emotional and psychological experiences have discontinued the use of the medication.
The Advantages of Clomid
It is the most popular among other brands and the preferred drug to treat infertility as it is very cost effective. Clomid has a higher rate of success as compared with other high end clomifene products available on the market. It has an 80 percent rate of success in producing ovulation and women will have a 50 percent chance of getting pregnant.
Some Other Factors to Consider That May Vary the Effectiveness of Clomid
- Age – it has been observed that Clomid is helpful in women who are 35 years or older when they are producing an ample supply of ova or eggs.
- Weight – women who are overweight or underweight are less likely getting pregnant and no amount of Clomid could help them get pregnant. It is important before undergoing Clomid medication to achieve a normal and healthy body weight.
It is better to consult a medical specialist before taking this drug to avoid any serious or fatal health implications.
