Cytotec is most commonly used to reduce the risk of stomach ulcers. This is specifically used in conjunction with a person taking NSAIDs such as aspirin, ibuprofen and naproxen.
This medication is also used with mifepristone to end a pregnancy. On the other hand, it is also sometimes used in childbirth to assist in child delivery by inducing labor or to promote cervical ripening.
How Does it Work?
Its method of action is to primarily reduce the amount of acid released by the stomach cells. It also helps in the protection of the stomach lining. This action is due to Cytotec being a prostaglandin.
Things to Take Note of Before Using Cytotec
It is important to know if you have any allergies. The use of this medication may cause adverse reactions or inhibit the full effectiveness of the drug.
You should also inform your physician if any of the below situations are applicable to you:
- If you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant. This drug has been used in the conduct of abortion. Thus, it is highly likely that you will experience a miscarriage if you take this during pregnancy, and highly unlikely for you to become pregnant.
- If you are taking herbal or any dietary supplement. There may be interactions that bring about adverse reactions or prevent the full effectiveness of the drug.

- If you are experiencing irritable bowel syndrome or dehydration. One of the effect of the drug may cause further dehydration and may lead to electrolyte imbalance.
What Are the Side Effects?
One of the most common side effects is nausea or stomach cramps. Remember that the method of action of this medication is to control gastric acid, and before this happens the stomach may produce a lot of gastric juices that causes this side effect before the condition improves.
How Do I Use Cytotec?
It is important to use it as prescribed by your physician.
Most commonly, it is taken orally with food to avoid further stomach irritation, and to prevent the occurrence of side effects.

There is drug interaction that could happen if Cytotec is taken with other medicines. Only one major drug interaction was noted. If Cytotec is taken with Dinoprostone or any derivative, it may cause severe cramping or bleeding. It is important to provide your physician with this information.
The other drug reactions range from moderate to minor, such as taking Cytotec with any drug composed of magnesium carbonate, which can worsen diarrhea.
