Cytotec is most commonly used to reduce the risk of stomach ulcers.  This is specifically used in conjunction with a person taking NSAIDs such as aspirin, ibuprofen and naproxen.

This medication is also used with mifepristone to end a pregnancy. On the other hand, it is also sometimes used in childbirth to assist in child delivery by inducing labor or to promote cervical ripening.

How Does it Work?

Its method of action is to primarily reduce the amount of acid released by the stomach cells.  It also helps in the protection of the stomach lining.  This action is due to Cytotec being a prostaglandin.

Things to Take Note of Before Using Cytotec

It is important to know if you have any allergies.  The use of this medication may cause adverse reactions or inhibit the full effectiveness of the drug.

You should also inform your physician if any of the below situations are applicable to you:

  • If you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant.  This drug has been used in the conduct of abortion.  Thus, it is highly likely that you will experience a miscarriage if you take this during pregnancy, and highly unlikely for you to become pregnant.
  • If you are taking herbal or any dietary supplement.  There may be interactions that bring about adverse reactions or prevent the full effectiveness of the drug.
  • if you have a history of heart disease.  There may be some reaction that may cause aggravation of the pre-existing condition.
  • If you are experiencing irritable bowel syndrome or dehydration.  One of the effect of the drug may cause further dehydration and may lead to electrolyte imbalance.

What Are the Side Effects?

One of the most common side effects is nausea or stomach cramps.  Remember that the method of action of this medication is to control gastric acid, and before this happens the stomach may produce a lot of gastric juices that causes this side effect before the condition improves.

How Do I Use Cytotec?

It is important to use it as prescribed by your physician.

Most commonly, it is taken orally with food to avoid further stomach irritation, and to prevent the occurrence of side effects.

Make sure that you don’t take any antacid that has magnesium 1 to 2 hours before you take Cytotec. This may bring about reactions which may inhibit the maximum effectiveness of Cytotec.

The last dose of the drug is usually taken at bedtime.  This is due to decreased stomach activity and usually reduces the occurrence of diarrhea.

What Safety Information Should I Know?

In the first few weeks of taking Cytotec, diarrhea is a common occurrence. If it persists more than a week, make sure to you inform your physician.

If you are scheduled for a surgery or emergency care, make sure disclose that you are taking Cytotec.

Cytotec should not be taken if you are breastfeeding.  Studies have shown that this drug can cause harm to the fetus. If it is really necessary to take this drug, make sure you discuss it with your physician first.

If overdose is suspected, make sure that you visit the nearest emergency room or call the poison hotline immediately.

What if I Missed a Dose?

You should take the missed dose immediately as soon as you remember it. However, if you remember your missed when it’s time for the next one, forget about the missed one and continue with your regular schedule.  Do not take 2 tablets at the same time to compensate.

What Are the Drug Interactions That I Should Know About?

There is drug interaction that could happen if Cytotec is taken with other medicines.  Only one major drug interaction was noted. If Cytotec is taken with Dinoprostone or any derivative, it may cause severe cramping or bleeding.  It is important to provide your physician with this information.

The other drug reactions range from moderate to minor, such as taking Cytotec with any drug composed of magnesium carbonate, which can worsen diarrhea.

All of this information should be provided to the physician, and make sure to avoid abruptly discontinuing the intake of the drug without the doctors advice.
