Propecia is the brand name of a generic drug, Finasteride, which is commonly used to treat benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) and medication for male pattern baldness (MPB).
Prospecia comes in a film coated tablet form that contains an active ingredient of 1mg finasteride, with some other inactive ingredients, as follows; lactose monohydrate, pre-gelatinized starch, sodium starch glycolate, microcrystalline cellulose, hydoxypropyl cellulose, hydroxypropyl methylcellulose, magnesium stearate, titanium dioxide, Docusate sodium, red ferric oxide, yellow ferric oxide and talc. This film coated tablet is orally administered in a dosage prescribed by your doctor. The film coating is a protection against mishandling as the drug could be absorbed by the body through skin contact.
Finasteride is a synthetic compound of 4-azasteroid, a white crystalline powder that is generally insoluble in water, but is easily soluble in low alcohol solvent and chloroform. Propecia works as a specific inhibitor to prevent the conversion of androgen testosterone into DHT, or better known by its technical term, 5a-dihydrotestosterone. DHT is believed to cause hair loss and plays a role in the development of benign prostatic hyperplasia and prostate cancer.
Propecia is recommended to be taken once a by swallowing a 1mg tablet. Generally the medication period will last for 3 months; however, the medication could be extended if it is necessary, as may be determined by a health care professional. The benefits of the continued use of this medication should always be monitored and re-evaluated regularly. A reversal of the effects of Propecia could be experienced within a 12 month period after stopping the medication.

Why Finasteride should not be used by women and in children
Propecia, or Finasteride in its generic name, was approved in 1992 by the FDA as a for only male drug. It has been shown, in several studies, that there is a high risk of birth defects among fetus’ whose mother, while pregnant, was exposed to Finasteride. This drug could enter the body by means of skin absorption.
Women who are pregnant or planning to conceive a child should take extraordinary precautions not to be exposed to the drug. This drug had been found to cause genital abnormalities among developing male fetus and infants.
Storage and Handling
Storing this drug should be done away from the reach of children under room temperature and the container cap should always be tightly sealed to keep the tablet away from moisture that could damage its protective film coating.
Do not allow women of reproductive age to handle the drug with broken protective coating as Propecia could be absorbed by the body through skin contact, resulting in a probable risk to the male fetus.
This drug is very popular among balding people and also a popular prescription drug among doctors. However, its use without the recommendation of a licensed medical professional should always be avoided. Self-medication has its own disadvantages and usually results in serious health problems.
Overdose and Remedy
While there were reports of overdoses to the drug, there have been no reported serious adverse reactions to Finasteride. There is no specific or recommended treatment on a finasteride overdose. However, it is better to immediately ask for emergency assistance from medical healthcare professionals or from emergency rescue professionals.
